Phoenix to Serve as One of Four United States Locations to Hold 2016 Global Energy Race
WHAT: On Sunday, September 25, 2016, Phoenix will serve as one of 37 international locations to hold the 2016 Global Energy Race. This is the first time Phoenix will be a host city. The race is managed globally by Grupo Bimbo, the world’s largest baking company. Bimbo Bakeries USA, the U.S. arm of Grupo Bimbo, will host the four races held in the United States. The races offer a 10K run option, certified by USA Track and Field, as well as a 3K family fun run/walk. The Phoenix race will be part of a Guinness World Records attempt: The most number of cities participating in the same race on the same day.
For each kilometer completed by each participant in Phoenix, Bimbo Bakeries USA will donate two slices of bread to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance – one loaf of bread per completed 10K. First place male and female winners of the 10K race in each participating city will receive an all-expenses paid trip to run in any 2017 Global Energy Race participant city.
The race, started in 2015, was originally held in 22 cities, from Beijing to Long Beach, California. In 2016, the race adds 15 additional locations, for a total of 37 races to be held in 22 countries.
