A New Leaf Awarded $100,000 from Mercy C.A.R.E.S.; Grant to Support Emergency Shelter Stabilization

(MESA, Ariz. – April 15, 2025) – Mercy C.A.R.E.S. has awarded A New Leaf a Mercy C.A.R.E.S. Community Reinvestment Grant in the amount of $100,000. The grant will increase A New Leaf’s capacity to ensure that local individuals and families experiencing homelessness receive the comprehensive support they need to achieve independence and stability.

“A New Leaf’s eight emergency shelter programs supported through this grant go far beyond a bed and a meal, providing wrap-around support services to help individuals and families move toward long-term stability,” said Michael Hughes, chief executive officers of A New Leaf. “This grant will help us provide critical shelter, basic needs, and comprehensive support services to our neighbors facing barriers to safe, permanent housing. We are honored to partner with Mercy C.A.R.E.S to address the urgent need for shelter services when we are facing uncertain support from government resources.”

According to Hughes, the support services being funded through the grant include case management, employment support, housing navigation, legal aid, financial wellness, transportation, life skills, children’s services, health services, and referrals to other needed community resources.

Mercy C.A.R.E.S., which stands for Community Action Resources Education and Service, is Mercy Care’s community giving initiative. Through grant funding, sponsorships, volunteer efforts and board participation, Mercy C.A.R.E.S. supports AHCCCS’ Whole Person Care Initiative, which addresses social risk factors to improve health outcomes.

“Through Mercy C.A.R.E.S., we partner with organizations across the state whose health focus areas align with ours and one of those is addressing housing security,”” said Trisha Stuart, community relations director at Mercy Care. “A New Leaf’s emergency shelters are a critical resource for those experiencing the housing crisis in our community. These shelters provide  vulnerable families and individuals with safety, basic needs, and comprehensive services that are needed. “
