Young Sheldon Copies Young Abbie
We all have different stories about how we got into PR.
While watching a recent episode of the popular CBS show Young Sheldon, one of my favorite shows, part of the storyline reminded me of how Abbie got her start in PR.
Abbie’s story is that when she was in sixth grade, the school administration took away the students’ sixth-grade graduation dance. She didn’t think it was fair so she staged a picket line in front of the school. She also called a few television stations – Channel 5 showed up and she did an interview with Larry Martel. In light of the demonstration and related media coverage, the administration changed its mind and allowed the dance.
On the CBS sitcom, the adolescent genius Sheldon was angry about bread available at the grocery store. Happy Hearth Home Bakeries’ new bread had a different taste than his regular bread due to a new baking procedure, which was “faster and cheaper.” So – he called Channel 7, which showed up to interview the 9-year-old about the change in flavor.
Just like Arizona Family’s “3 On Your Side” or ABC 15’s “Let Joe Know,” the media coverage helped pressure the bread company to make a change back to its original recipe.
Sadly, later in life and despite his early success, Sheldon chose theoretical physics as a career over public relations.
