This past weekend, the House of Broadcasting, Inc. honored three individuals who have had a tremendous impact on Arizona media over the years: Susan Karis, Win Holden and Tom Chauncey II.

MediaWatch AZ’s own Mike Shaldjian was on hand for the festivities and was nice enough to guest blog for us about the event. Thanks, Mike – now take it away!

Mike: The co-emcees for the evening were Pat McMahon and Mary Jo West, two broadcast icons in their own right.

The evening began with entertainment by Brad Zinn who performed part of his popular act, “The Great Comedians” show. It gave us a humorous look back at such greats as Groucho Marx, Johnny Carson and Jack Benny, after which there was a video tribute to all three honorees, including some very touching moments from friends and family, followed by proclamations for each from Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.

Among those in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. David Miller, Del Lewis, Bill Shover, Marty and Wendy Manning, who also provided a fabulous “red carpet” experience as guests arrived, and Sheriff Joe and Ava Arpaio (yes, there were cameras there!!).

Their list of accomplishments and service, both to our state and the broadcast community are too great to note here, but certainly have not gone unnoticed! We toast to you, Win, Susan and Tom.

This event, which is held every two years, has in the past also honored Michael Owens, Al McCoy, Hugh Downs, Karl Eller, Del and Jewell Lewis, John Junker, Jerry Colangelo, Jack Clifford and Debbie Gaby.

The House of Broadcasting Museum is located on the second floor of 7150 E. 5th Ave. in Scottsdale and is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich broadcast history here in Arizona. Admission is free and I encourage all of you to visit in the near future.

I’ve been to the museum. It is really worth the trip. There’s lots of cool stuff to see and the people are nice, especially if you’re human and don’t do anything out of the ordinary on the rug.
