#MediaMonday – Joe Chitwood
Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of assisting with the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards. During the gala event, the Emmys inducted some special individuals into the Silver Circle Society, which recognizes individuals who have served in the industry for a minimum
of 25 years, with the majority of it being spent in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Among them was Joe Chitwood, who currently works up in Flagstaff as the station manager for NAU TV.
A great guy, so we thought we would take this #MediaMonday to tell you a little more about him.
If you are new to #MediaMonday, it is a weekly blog where we ask a member of the media to tell the world at-large a little more about themselves. Other profiles available here.
And now on to Joe:
While currently at NAU, his story actually begins at the U of A in mid-1980s, he worked very hard to develop the school’s Distance Learning Unit into a nationally known organization. Joe is considered a pioneer in Instruction Television Fixed Service (ITFS).
Eventually, Joe was appointed to Assistant General Manager for the Multi-Media Unit at the school, where he again stood-out by being able to use the technical facilities as a revenue-generator by producing and transmitting news, sports and public affairs programming for commercial partners.
But Joe is certainly about more than just the broadcasting business – he spent many years volunteering with the Rotary Club of Tucson, assisting the organization in promoting their annual Tucson Classic Car Show Fundraiser.
After more than 23 years with the team at U of A, Joe has found a new home in Northern Arizona with NAU TV, where he focuses on coverage of athletic events and distinguished speakers as well as other campus, Flagstaff and statewide activities.

Congrats on the honor, Joe!
