#MediaMonday – Doug Franz
Each Monday, we are posting a blog to help our readers get to know the media just a little bit better.
With a TWIST!
No, we aren’t posting story pitch tips or media lists, but instead great stories from the media themselves about their lives, their work and other little known facts! Think of it as your first “networking” opportunity of the week!
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Doug Franz, co-host of Doug and Wolf in the Morning on Sports 620 KTAR.
So, Doug, time to share!
What do you want to tell the blogosphere about yourself today?
I’m a pretty simple guy with a very abnormal schedule. I sleep for about two or three hours at night, from about midnight until two or three. My wake-up time is completely dependent on how much I got done the night before to prepare for the show. I get home around noon everyday and try to eat lunch with my wife. Then it’s the nap. I sleep for about four to five hours in the afternoon. If I don’t get my nap, the week is shot.
I read about five newspapers a day and probably hit five websites religiously to get ready for the show. Show prep is never-ending. I work until I find myself re-reading the same paragraph and then I shut it down. I’m the only morning radio personality that I know of who doesn’t use tobacco or coffee. However, I never do a show without a Mountain Dew in the morning.
The thing that would shock most people is how little I know about sports from the end of the show Friday until Sunday night. I completely shut it down. I don’t read anything and I rarely watch anything. I spend the whole weekend playing with my kids and getting to know my wife. There’s so many times on a Saturday someone will say, “What did you think about…” and I have no idea what happened. Sunday night is then massive catch-up. I watch about 7 straight hours of sports firing up the DVR to see everything I didn’t watch from the weekend.
It’s a weird job since I work almost 17 hours a day but I’ll never say it’s hard since I do about 11 hours worth of that work while sitting on the couch.
Personally I’m not that thrilling. Never cheated on my wife so I’m not as exciting as Tiger. I’ve never taken an illegal drug or smoked a cigarette so I don’t have a comeback story like Josh Hamilton.
Life story is about great experiences. I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon, seen Pink Floyd in concert and witnessed my wife sing the National Anthem at Fenway Park. My life-changing moment was the birth of my first daughter 4 months early @ 1 lb. 4 oz. The doctors said there was only a 40% chance she’d live and her quality-of-life wouldn’t be worth much and pushed to end the pregnancy. Since I believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness I thought it was wrong to have men in white coats determine her opportunity at those things. She’s now 10 and she’s the single nicest person I’ve ever met and has no medical defects.
I’m just a man who loves his wife and kids and hopes to be half the man his father is…albeit with a really cool job.
