PRSA: Network & Celebrate

Last night, I attended the PRSA Phoenix Network & Celebrate event at The Dressing Room. I was the slightest bit nervous since this was the first PRSA event that I’ve attended without one of my HMA team members by my side. But here I am today, eager to talk about the fun had by all, and how PRSA Phoenix is one of most welcoming organizations of all time to a newbie (both in PR and to town) like me.
I was first struck by PRSA members’ hospitality during the holiday party, which took place before I had even celebrated my first month with HMA. Not sure what to expect, I pictured a lot of awkward conversations and holding up a wall in some corner of the room for the majority of the night. Instead, I was greeted warmly, and instantly made a dozen new connections.
It’s a pretty cool feeling walking in and immediately feeling somewhat at home, knowing that the majority of the people there are just your type of outgoing. That same feeling is present at all of the PRSA events I’ve attended thus far, including yesterday’s Network & Celebrate get-together.
PR pros not only have the ability to strike up a conversation with just about anyone, they also do their research. Even if they haven’t met you, they most likely know who you are or what connection you have with them. We do our research and pride ourselves in being in the know. In social settings, I find that this genuine curiosity lends to easy conversation and a lack of awkwardness.
Moreover, I’m a firm believer that going out, meeting new people and making significant connections makes an organization stronger and in turn, contributes to individual professional growth.
Needless to say, I’m looking forward to the next PRSA Phoenix chapter event.
