Valley Cancer Survivor is named 2013 ARM ‘Crusader’

PHOENIX, Ariz. (September 17, 2013) –The Anne Rita Monahan (ARM) Foundation has selected Janice Coggins as this year’s recipient of the ARM Foundation Crusader Award. This year’s award will be presented during ARM’s 5th annual Tea for Teal, a traditional high English tea, from 2 – 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at Scottsdale’s DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 5401 N Scottsdale Road.

Coggins, an ovarian cancer survivor, educator, spiritual leader, speaker and author — is a voice for women’s health and a leader in the ovarian cancer movement here in Arizona. She began her healthcare career as a psychiatric social worker at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. Her experiences there propelled her to get a master’s degree in social work and later took her to Louisiana where she had the opportunity to work as a grief counselor and become a founding board member of Hospice of Acadiana.

“My career has given me extensive experience in the healthcare field and the ability to educate others and provide encouragement for women navigating life’s struggles,” said Coggins. “Through these experiences and my own health journey I’ve been able to learn what it means to live life to its fullest.”

This life motto has encouraged Coggins to continue to raise ovarian cancer awareness, author the book “Ovarian Cancer? You can NOT be serious!” and start the Teal it Up Foundation, a nonprofit charity that sponsors golf tournaments to raise money for ovarian cancer research.

Aside from honoring the cancer survivor, guests at the tea will encounter a lively champagne reception and have the opportunity to participate a silent auction, raffle, and hat contest. The traditional English Tea will treat guests to an assortment of finger sandwiches, fresh baked scones and petite desserts.

All proceeds from the Tea for Teal will benefit research led by TGen, whose team of scientists seeks to develop reliable tests in three areas of unmet needs:

Screening for earlier detection, when ovarian cancer is most curable.Rapid identification of patients whose disease is predicted to resist standard-of-care therapy at the time of diagnosis so that alternative interventions are considered early.Identifying new vulnerabilities in all drug-resistant forms of ovarian cancer that can be exploited with targeted therapy.

Individual tickets for the tea are $70; a table for 10 is $600. To register, please visit http://anneritamonahan.org/.
