The latest to enter the category is “When the Game Stands Tall.” While it’s about the Concord, Calif., De La Salle High School football team that amassed a 151-game winning streak over a 12-year period, it is more about winning being the result of character and hard work, and how individuals, as a team, respond to crushing defeat.
The Spartans’ head coach during that run, Bob Ladouceur, joined the teamwork quote-annals with this:
“Give a perfect effort.”
Ladouceur’s assistant, Terry Eidson, also scores big: “Don’t let a game define who you are. Let the way you live your lives do that!”
Their continuing messages to the team are about accountability, doing things the right way and pride.
It’s not the greatest sports movie of all-time, but it’s got some quotes that make the list.
Here are some of my other all-time favorites when it comes to teamwork, preparation and the end-result that comes with it:
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford
“The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” -- Vince Lombardi
“The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.” – John Wooden
“Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing. You don’t do things right once in a while…you do them right all the time.” -- Vince Lombardi
“Failure happens all the time. It happens every day in practice. What makes you better is how you react to it.” -- Mia Hamm
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” -- Pele
“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” -- Michael Jordan
“The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.” – Knute Rockne
“Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” – Lou Holtz"The key is not the will to win… everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important." – Bob Knight.
