Abbie and ShelbyI’m nearing the one year mark when I flew out to Arizona and met with Abbie to learn about HMA and agency life. At that time, I had toured many different agencies with my PRSSA Chapter, so I had a pretty good idea of what agency life was like, but not everything can be learned from agency visits. There are things that you experience on-the-job that can’t really be taught as it comes from different experiences.

Here are things that I learned from working in an agency that I had not known otherwise:

  • Organization will keep you sane – With multiple clients and multiple projects, spend time on finding out what kind of to-do list system works well for you.
  • Communication – Again, with multiple clients, multiple projects and multiple people in the mix, it’s so important to communicate with everyone on statuses and outcomes.
  • Work styles will differ – Everyone will have their own work style, even you, so being able to learn how to work with multiple different types of people will lead to a more cohesive and unified team.

For the new pros out there, what have you recently learned? This goes to any college students as well, what are things you’d like to know about working in an agency?
