positive social mediaWhether you’re a fan of social media or not, you certainly can’t ignore that it is a prevalent part of everyday life. A big life event happens like an engagement or baby announcement- you probably found out on Facebook. A company is changing their privacy policies- you probably found out on Twitter. Social media has become a hub for sharing news at any hour of the day.

That being said, social media has also been used as an outlet for cyber-bulling and bashing companies or individuals, which completely defeats the purpose of these outlets.

When used appropriately, social media outlets can do a whole lot of good in this world.

Here are three outcomes of beneficial social media:

  1. Connection- Social media began as a way to connect with others. It provides a way for individuals to find others, connect with them, and keep up with the happenings of everyday life. Without these outlets, you may never find that friend from high school that you lost touch with, or know what’s going on with that family member that lives across the country.
  2. Collaboration/Idea Sharing- Have you ever posted a question to social media and had it immediately answered by your friends and followers? Social media is a great place to share ideas and collaborate on both work and home matters.  Utilize these platforms to gain knowledge and share your perspective with others.
  3. Praise- How often do you wish someone recognized you for the project you aced or the report you nailed? Use your platforms to praise others for their hard work and lift up the people making an impact around you. You never know how much a quick Tweet can impact someone.
What’s one way you can start using social media to make a positive impact?
