In baseball, they call the catcher's equipment "the tools of ignorance." There is not a similar moniker for the umpire's equipment, which is virtually the same as the catcher's.
As a matter of course, both the catcher and the umpire are in very dangerous and vulnerable positions when they are behind the plate. Good catchers work very hard to try to keep the umpire from getting hit with the ball.
Every now and then, you see something that does not belong in society, let alone in sport: someone intentionally trying to injure someone, like a catcher purposely allowing a pitch to strike the guy calling balls and strikes.
In this case, the catcher's equipment has a much lower classification than "tools of ignorance."
