You get an iPad! You get an iPad!

The Oprah Winfrey Show ended its 25 season run earlier this year, and with it went Oprah’s Favorite Things. In case you live under a rock, (or are male), Oprah’s Favorite Things was an annual list of the hottest “Things” available to consumers; everything from food to clothing to automobiles. It was excellent holiday gift reference material.

Since I don’t have thousands of PR pros sending me samples of their products, I am not qualified to say what the hippest and hottest Things are this year. But I am qualified to say what those PR pros are hoping for – and I’m willing to bet it’s not the Aerolatte milk frother they’re pushing.

Just in time for holidays, here is The Official List of PR Pros’ Favorite Things. Sorry – no free samples this time*.

iPad – While laptop and smartphone didn’t make this list (as those would be on the essentials list, somewhere below oxygen but above electricity) the iPad is sure to top many lists. I don’t need to tell you all the digital magic the late Steve Jobs was known for creating, but I will tell you apps like Evernote are miracle workers when it comes to staying organized.  My favs include Toodledo to keep up on my to-do list and QuickVoice for recording interviews.  Be warned: Although it is gift-giving time, the iPad 3 is rumored to be released in February.

Super-geek alert: Your favorite public relations specialists already tablet-equipped? Give them the NuTouch glove, special gloves you can wear and still use touch screen devices.

FinderBinder AZ- The key to a successful story placement is pitching to the right person, but with hundreds of media outlets and thousands of reporters in Arizona, it is impossible to know everyone in the media. The FinderBinderAZ is a continually updated database of all journalists, producers, editors etc. in Arizona. Using FinderBinder can literally save you hours researching reporters or sending releases to uninterested parties. (Disclosure here…we are the Arizona franchise owner).

Tweetdeck – Not all our Favorite Things need be expensive! Tweetdeck is a free application to help you manage several social media accounts. Switching back and forth between clients’ Twitters and Facebooks can be time consuming and confusing. Tweekdeck makes it easier to organize with columns and allows you to quickly change accounts.

DVR- Can you believe that only a few short years ago we had to record live TV on a VHS tape? That took hours of planning ahead hoping whoever used the tape last remembered to rewind. Now you don’t even have to be home in order to schedule a recording of your client’s last minute spot on the afternoon news – there’s an app for that.

Five hour energy shot- This infographic says PR professionals are the second highest consumers of coffee. While I might start my day with a venti-quad- nonfat-no whip-light-ice-extra-salted-caramel-mocha, I don’t have time to be brewing or drive-thruing during the work day. A quick sip of a 5-hour energy shot will keep your energy levels up without throwing off your rhythm.

Spare clothes – Our day can take us from law firm conference rooms to horses’ stables. Too bad one pair of shoes can’t. Keeping a garment bag of basics in the office or in the car is a must. A little spritz of Febreze and the lawyers will never know you just came from your meeting with the zoo.

Excedrin – No explanation needed. Other helpful first-aid tools: wrist braces for Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, band-aid for paper cuts and wine for creativity.

Client freebies – Be it a magnet with their logo, coupon for their service, or light up key-chain, have something you can give away with the company logo on hand. You never know when you might have an opportunity to stuff a swag bag or shower your Facebook fans with gifts.

Instant source sheet – Having a quick reference sheet of all current client pitches is crucial to filling those last minute reporter requests. Keeping it updated with new ideas and reporter notes can help an entire agency stay on the same page.

Car power adapter- Trying to balance all you clients’ events, meetings and interviews can have you spending a lot of time in your car. Having access to a normal prong outlet in your car will keep all your gadgets powered up and keep you connected while out of the office. Also comes in handy for touching up hair with a curling iron, fire up the steamer for wrinkly clothes and power a hot plate so no meal is skipped. I suggest the car not be in motion during hot plate use.

Funny and smart co-workers – Perhaps the most essential of all of PR Pros’ Favorite Things is their team. Not only do we need each other to bounce ideas off of, help with large projects and support, we need each other for a laugh or solution. Most of all, we need each other to stay sane.

*Although I encourage any reps of the aforementioned products to send samples.

What will be topping your wish list this year?

  1. Brittany Richardson says:

  2. I could not love this blog any more – and that is saying something since I hate Oprah! I would also add to the list Tweetcaster, Phoenix PR Pros Facebook fan page and candy in the office!

  3. I wasn’t familiar with Oprah’s Top 25, but was aware of Dave Letterman’s Top 10. I am also in-tune with Sportscener’s Top 10 Plays of the Day. While it doesn’t have an official name, I’d like to add: “Places for business cards in car, wallet/purse, notebook and gym bag.”

  4. Stephanie Lough says:

If anyone in my family is reading, take note on the garment bag in Very Berry Paisley.

  5. Nick Nelson says:

Excedrin is the gift that keeps on giving.

  6. If only you could buy funny and smart co-workers.
