Arizona Press Club logoThis isn’t the first photography contest we’ve written about – but it’s the closest to home for us.

Do you think you are an award-winning photographer?    The Arizona Press Club is giving you that chance – but you must be an Arizona resident.

MISSION: The purpose of the Arizona Photojournalism Awards (APA) is to recognize the best visual coverage of Arizona by news-gathering photographers. We aim to encourage growth within the profession, build stronger relationships in the photojournalism community and instill passion to the next generation. We support student photojournalists by awarding two scholarships to the winners of the annual APA College Photographers of the Year contest.

WHO CAN COMPETE? All photographers (staff, part-time, freelance, contract and college student) are eligible if they are Arizona residents who had their work published in print or online by a news/sports gathering organization during 2013. Wire service and agency photographers based in Arizona are eligible.

One flat fee: For $50, each photographer will be able to enter every category — from Sports Action to Video to Photographer of the Year — and as many as 28 images.

Two-for-one: Community (non-metro) photographers’ entries in the Community Singles categories will automatically be entered in the Statewide Singles categories. Your work will get the bonus of going up against metro photographers from across the state, and there’s no need to submit twice.

New chances to win: For the first time, Sports Pictorial and Sports Portrait & Personality categories have been added for both Statewide and Community, as well as new Video and Multimedia categories for Community. Two College Photographers of the Year will be named, instead of one.

An awards reception and gallery opening will be hosted in spring 2014 by contest sponsor Tempe Camera, where at least one photograph from every winning photographer will be featured at Tempe Camera Imaging Center’s 530Gallery. Details to come.

DEADLINE: All entries and signed entry forms must be postmarked by Mon. Jan. 6, 2014. Mail entries on a CD or DVD with your signed Eligibility Certification form and contest entry forms to:
