“What is…” Wednesday – What is Media Training?

Santa has been busy this holiday season – selling cars.

The jolly old elf has been hawking Mercedes, as well as Chevy pick-ups. The Mercedes spot is nothing special.

The Chevy spots, however, are subtly very funny and my favorites of the season.

In one, Santa is on the sales floor when a prospective customer mentions to Santa that he likes to hunt…  “Deer.” Then quickly changes his answer to “fish.”

Another spot has Santa talking with a couple when the woman actually tugs on his beard.  “That’s my beard” he tells her before she finally hugs him.

In another, Santa is leaving the break-room and his co-workers are looking at cookie crumbs.  Santa says to them, “I thought they were for me.”

There’s also a spot in which a customer wants to sit on Santa’s lap.

In yet another in the series, two of Santa’s co-workers catch him doing some stretching exercises ask him “how he does it?” He touches them on the nose and replies “with lots of little helpers.”

I am not an advertising expert – but each of them brings a smile to my face.

Any holiday commercials that stand out for you?

The Lexus “December to remember” ads have been driving me CRAZY. There are a few different ones – a couple in an elevator, a family playing guitar hero – and a familiar, rather generic sounding Christmas song is being playing in the background. The woman (or man) stops what she is doing because she KNOWS that the Christmas song means a Lexus is parked out front with a big bow on it. That’s one giant assumption.

I know that I have never associated a Christmas song with Lexus (although apparently they have been using the instrumental since ’99, but makes me think of Home Alone more than anything else. Maybe it is genius, forcing people that watch to start relating that song to Lexus, but I think they are just awful! I had to see a few before I even realized the trigger of surprise was the song.

    Super dislike:

  2. I’m also a big fan of the VW commercials in which the customers forget they are on a test drive. One duo is headed for Vegas while a family parks in their own garage as if they already owned the car.

I’m not even the market for a new ride — but love the spots. maybe I’m watching too much TV. Or too much sports on TV? Nah.

“Too much TV” – interesting phrase. Not sure I have head that before, but I do know it is entirely impossible 😉

  4. I agree on the Chevy ads – so clever! They definitely do their job by catching your attention, making you laugh and secretly hoping that if you walked into a Chevy dealer Santa would be there.

I love the Nissan commericals. . .because the guy singing “The most wonderful sale of the year” has a great voice.
