How I define Public Relations:
To me, it boils down to storytelling—we find a meaningful message and then translate that message into a powerful and relevant story.
Hat you most identify with:
My beloved ASU hat. It’s the hat I wear almost every weekend, well, because #momlife. But also because it represents me and who I am-- an Arizona native and a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This is where I found my passion, where I expanded my skill set and where I discovered exactly what I wanted to do.
I was born and raised here in Scottsdale, Arizona. I attended Horizon High School for two years and then transferred to Notre Dame Prep. I was a student athlete- a competitive dancer and captain of the girl’s lacrosse team. I earned a 3.8 GPA and headed straight for the most beautiful college in the USA.
Arizona State University.
I don’t leave far from home, alright?! And I also didn’t really have a choice. I was in a Sun Devil cheerleading uniform by the time I was one.
My main reason for transferring to Notre Dame Prep was because I adored a small school- a place where you actually know every student, every teacher, every faculty member and every coach. You made meaningful connections.
Therefore, ASU was no doubt a culture shock. Attending those huge lecture classes where I was one in about 400 simply wasn’t for me. That, and my first major was Kinesiology and I quickly learned Science was not my strong suit. I called my mom in tears one day as I had never struggled in school before.
“You are a writer, Kelsey. Go check out the Walter Cronkite School.”
This was true. I had always loved writing and it was something I did for fun. I took essay classes on purpose and had journals full of thoughts, quotes and ideas.
After weeks of doubt and deliberation, I decided to get myself out of my own way. I got in my car and drove to downtown Phoenix. I stepped foot into the school and I knew I was home.
Once accepted into the program, I dove in head first. Writing, Editing, PR, Photography, Videography, Web and Graphic Design, Social Media—there was so much more to Journalism than I thought. And I have been lucky enough to utilize such a diverse set of skills in nearly every professional endeavor since graduating Cum Laude in 2011.
So here I am now. I am a mom of two little girls: Parker (age 3) and Riley (5 months old). And while being a mom is no doubt my favorite job title, I never lost the urge to work, create, connect and grow. However, I also told myself that I wasn’t going to settle on any old job.
And I didn’t.
I am the newest Account Executive for HMA Public Relations and I couldn’t be more excited to be here.
Fun Facts: I am a great stalker, I am an ID Network fanatic, and a true die-hard Cardinals fan.
Professional Experience: Magazine (copy writing and production assistant), Ad Agency (social media, PR, copywriting, graphic design), Restaurant and live music venue (marketing and entertainment)-- plus online sales, advertising, web work and whatever else was thrown my way! I love it all.
Enough about me, though. I am here for you. Now it’s time to tell your story.
