#MediaMonday – Kevin Curran

Each Monday, we are posting a blog to help our readers get to know the media just a little bit better.
With a TWIST!
No, we aren’t posting story pitch tips or media lists, but instead great stories from the media themselves about their lives, their work and other little known facts! Think of it as your first “networking” opportunity of the week!
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Kevin Curran, nightside assignment editor at KPNX/12News.
So, Kevin, time to share!
What do you want to tell the blogosphere about yourself today?
I arrived in the Valley in 1992 after bouncing between New York and Washington once too often. My first office was at the legendary KRIZ facility at 75th Avenue and Camelback Road, where I became the operations manager that put the original Edge on the air, established our first all-sports station and brought Howard Stern to the market.
My switch to TV happened at KOLD, the CBS affiliate in Tucson (and a long commute from Scottsdale). After a whirlwind three years in Los Angeles where I did everything from produce for Inside Edition to engineer Lakers games on the radio, I returned to Phoenix and KTVK. I moved up the dial to KPNX six years ago.
In 2007, I completed my MBA at ASU. I spend my mornings as an adjunct instructor in business at Scottsdale and Mesa community colleges. It’s a lot of fun to discuss balance sheets at 11 a.m. and chase fire trucks at 3 p.m.!
Back to Channel 12, you may have heard we’re in a new facility. While being at 200 EVB has changed many things (like business cards), our basic operations have not changed. We may share a building with our corporate cousins at the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, but we maintain separate editorial operations. Reaching out to one of us won’t get you all three.
Our e-mail addresses did not change, but by now you should all have our new phone numbers and street address.
While I have your attention, I just wanted to repeat some pet peeves I have shared in various forums over the nine years I’ve been on local TV desks.

  • E-mail is the best way to pitch.
  • Don’t call between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Always include cell phones that will be answered for evening and weekend events.
  • Remember your e-mail will be copied and pasted into another system, so make sure it is in a form where that can be done.
  • Don’t include attachments. I’ll ask for them if I need them.
  • Watch your file size. I have a capped mailbox. If I have to send an urgent message and a 5MB e-mail comes in, it will likely be deleted unread.
  • A new one: Twitter is not a replacement for e-mail. I know K.D. Paine is pushing that idea, but it won’t happen. I try to read all my e-mails, I only see tweets that come in when I’m actually in front of the screen.

Speaking of Twitter, don’t forget to add @ARIZONA12NEWS and @12NEWSNIGHTSIDE to your follow lists so you’ll know what’s going on!
