#MediaMonday – Alexis DelChiaro

Each Monday, we are posting a blog to help our readers get to know the media just a little bit better.
With a TWIST!
No, we aren’t posting story pitch tips or media lists, but instead great stories from the media themselves about their lives, their work and other little known facts! Think of it as your first “networking” opportunity of the week!
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Fox 10 Arizona Morning fan favorite Alexis DelChiaro.
So, Alexis, time to share!
What do you want to tell the blogosphere about yourself today?
I discovered very early on at my Sacramento elementary school the desire for a career in journalism. It was a mock newscast in Mr. Landis’ 5th grade music class where I first thought, “Hey! This is fun, and I think you can actually make a career out of it!'” From then on, I knew I’d discovered my passion.
I was lucky enough to be a part of my high school’s Radio and Television program. I learned everything about what I had “gotten myself into” in the biz through this experience. The student run program produced daily radio shows and a weekly newscast. In addition to being a DJ and Anchor, I was chosen to be General Manager of the program my senior year, which coincidentally made me realize I never want a job in management!
I graduated from the beautiful University of California, Santa Barbara, with a major in communications, and a minor in Spanish. During college, I got my first live television experience on the sidelines of the football field reporting for Santa Barbara’s KEYT. One of my favorite experiences in college was studying abroad in Spain, learning the language and the culture. Another once and a life time experience was my internship at Good Morning America in Manhattan. What an exciting opportunity! I loved being at the center of a national news show and seeing what it takes to put it together from beginning to end.
I got my start in the Grand Canyon State in 2004 as a morning news and weather anchor at KYMA in Yuma. There is really something to be said for working in a small market. I got to try everything – anchoring, reporting, producing, editing, sports, weather…really everything! After that I was hooked on the early shift and moved to the valley for my job at FOX 10. Since September, 2006 I’ve been at FOX 10 in Phoenix where I co-anchor FOX 10 Arizona Morning from 4:30-10 a.m. along with FOX 10 News @ Noon.
I’ve been fortunate to cover a wide range of stories in my career, from interviewing American Idols to trying out for So You Think You Can Dance to touring the Grand Canyon by helicopter. Though the most exciting stories I’ve covered, certainly put me in the daredevil category. I had the opportunity to fly with the Navy’s prestigious Blue Angels, but it wasn’t until my pilot handed over the control stick that I got nervous. Everyone always wants to know one thing about flying with the Blue Angels and the answer is no… I didn’t pass out or get sick! I was also lucky enough to skydive with the elite U.S. Army Golden Knights.
When I’m not doing the news, I love to see the world. You can also find me around the Valley hiking, doing yoga, running and dancing! I also enjoy volunteering my time with organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the American Cancer Society. If I’m not any of these places, check Twitter or Facebook…you can definitely find me there!
