There was a time when “Master,” “Yale” and a giant bank safe symbolized lock-out.  And the slow-motion image of a bullet going through a Master padlock and the lock holding strong is entrenched in a generation of memories. Or the more current cyber- image of the yellow lock we see when conducting secure transactions over the internet.

But the new overwhelming image of lockout:  two of the highest profile professional sports leagues in the world, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, both fighting amongst themselves.

With owners and players from both groups bringing down their respective sports and eroding, at least temporarily, their fan bases, they will be in need of some image repair when they can get back on the same page.

Until then, some borrowed talking points for each side:

  • “Don’t kill the goose that lays the golden egg.”
  • “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”
  • “We’re just taking it one game at a time.”
  • “I’m just happy to be here, just hope I can help the club.”
  • “I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out.”
