Special events and festivals have long-been used as a way to showcase agricultural products.

The media coverage, product sampling and community outreach for such events have all the ingredients for a successful communications effort.  And, there might not be anything more prideful and wholesome than a community’s festival featuring an agricultural product that is part of the fabric of that particular area.

So it was with dismay that I recently read about the cancellation of Yuma’s long-running Lettuce Days celebration.   Even being named the best food festival in Arizona by National Geographic Traveler Magazine couldn’t save it.

The economics just didn’t work.

But don’t fret.  Depending on your taste, Arizona towns and cities still have these special events and agricultural festivals:

Sweet Corn Festival – Snowflake

Pumpkin Festival – Dewy-Humboldt

Apple Festival – Crown King

Pumpkin and Chili Party – Queen Creek

Cotton Festival – Marana

Pumpkin Days – Glendale

Peachmania Festival – Willcox

Mushroom Festival – Flagstaff

Prickly Pear Festival – Superior

Asian Pear Fair -- Willcox
