Happy first day of summer! What are you doing to celebrate? Hopefully, whatever it is, you will remember to stay safe and drink plenty of water, get some rest and sit in the shade of a palm tree.

One of the clients that I have the pleasure of working with is the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH). And this HOT summer we have been traveling across the state on a media tour to spread the message about heat awareness and safety, which include the messages around water, rest and shade.

During the media tour the three key lessons I learned were:

1) That you will absorb so many interesting statistics that you wondered how you lived before not ever knowing. Such as:

  • When you are working outside did you know you should drink 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes? WHA??? Sometimes, I can barely get myself to drink that amout of water in a day – Most of the time caffeine (and by caffeine I mean Starbucks and Coke Zero) just take over!
  • The same basic concepts should apply if you are enjoying outside activities such as hiking, running (i.e. Scottsdale Beat the Heat – if that can be enjoyed) or even taking a walk.

2) If you decide to just “drop off” a media kit to a station that you didn’t have an appointment with, be prepared to be asked for an immediate on-camera interview (because, of course, the pitch you have prepared is so good).

  • Which is great- but you should probably give your client a heads up before you walk in, not just say SURPRISE!

3) If you decide to ride together on a trip to Yuma (which according to my friend Kevin Curran- is the Paris of the West), be prepared for more than six hours in the car.

  • Luckily, we had “almost” the same taste in music (I will admit that Ke$ha is not for everyone), he understood the multiple restroom stops (thank you to his wife for that) and getting hangry (what my friends like to call me when I get really hungry) is probably not acceptable so be prepared to eat the best of what Gila Bend has to offer.

It is amazing what I learn from my job and my clients every day! I would love to know something you have learned recently, either from something job-related or from one of your clients.

I’ve certainly learned that my body cannot handle the heat like it used to. Probably mostly an age thing…

Hangry…. ha. I like that word. I promise to always keep you fed 🙂
