Well, what started out as me wanting to write a blog about how many public relations folks are right-brain dominant quickly turned into me singing this song over and over again.
You see, right-brained people are, according to some experts, analytical, mathematically and scientifically inclined, verbally concise and more “black and white” on issues. Left-brained people, on the flip side, are creative/imaginative thinkers, intuitive, hyper-visual, artistically and literary inclined and always looking for a way of doing something outside of the box (aka “their way”).
Given the above, specifically the inclination of right-brained folks to gravitate toward writing and other creative endeavors, I automatically assumed public relations people must be right-brained to the extreme.
But here is the thing… when I asked each of the public relations superstars in my office to take a simple online test here to confirm my theory, here were the results…
Scott’s Results: 59% left-brained and 41% right-brained
Abbie’s Results: 53% left-brained and 47% right-brained
Katie’s Results: 66% left-brained and 44% right-brained
Kelly’s Results: 50% left-brained and 50% right-brained
Rachel’s Results: 47% left-brained and 53% right-brained
And then we get to me…
Alison’s Results: 20% left-brained and 80% right-brained
Turns out, my colleagues benefit from using both sides of their brain at an almost completely equal rate! I am the lone right-brained PR person in the office! (explains SO MUCH – especially my hatred of math and conference calls.)
Once I thought about it, it made sense that successful business people – whether in a creative field or not – would use both sides of their brain equally.
So, I look to you in cyberspace, especially those in the communications industry. Take the test and share with us which brained you are – and if it fits your personality/work style!
