It’s funny the way things fall into place. HMA planned a volunteer day months ago. Little did we know then our day would coincide with #GivingTuesday. We couldn’t help but laugh while thinking, “this couldn’t have fallen on a more perfect day.” #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. Designated for the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, it is a time for charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world to come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
The organization we gave back to was Southwest Human Development. While this organization was new to some of us, it was selected by Rachel, as she and her son have spent a couple of weekend afternoons volunteering there through Families Giving Back. Annette Sutfin, volunteer engagement manager of Southwest Human Development, gave us a tour and briefed us on the company’s history.
The organization offers many programs for children and families such as Child Development and Mental Health, Disabilities Services, Early Literacy and Head Start as well as Child Welfare. Southwest Human Development’s preschool Head Start and Early Head Start programs have been recognized nationwide as models. For our #GivingTuesday, we spent the afternoon stocking 100s of children’s books for @SWHDaz for its literacy programs.
