In 2004 a little website called TheFacebook.com launched. During its first few months, The Facebook was presented to a limited audience of college students to use as a dating site. Fast forward 11 years and it has dropped the ‘The’ and expanded its audience just a little. More than 1.4 billion people log in to Facebook each month, makes a $12.47 billion in annual revenue, and Facebook has become a $211 billion company.
Facebook is celebrating its birthday by presenting the Facebook Friendship Stories. Facebook looked at how friendships connect people in distant places by locating cities at least 10,000 kilometers apart. Among those connected cities are: Glendale, Calif., and Yerevan, Armenia; Silver Spring, Md., and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Westminster, Calif. It’s pretty incredible to realize just how connected we all are through Facebook.
I guess that ‘dating site’ that Mark Zuckerberg set out to start was a good idea.
