Google for search, Pinterest for inspiration

Yesterday, I came across this article from Pando Daily that simply states “If Google is where you search for information, Pinterest wants to become where you search for inspiration.” As the article points out, Google is where you go when you want one answer and Pinterest is where you go for several answers, and a few ideas.

In college, I would spend countless hours on Pinterest – and not even realize it! I joined the site back when you had to be ‘invited’ to join. And now, it’s a site that I use often for ideas and information, both professionally and personally.

If you are looking for ideas, Pinterest seems to be the best bet. When you search, you get hundreds of photos matching your search, where as in Google Images, you get maybe a few relevant photos and several irrelevant photos.

Soon, Pinterest will start having ‘promoted pins’ and advertisements. Once that hits, and if it is successful, I think that Google will be looking over its shoulder. And with Google+ rumored to be going away, I don’t think they would be too happy to hear that Pinterest is doing search better.
