The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and I know many of us are looking forward to a three-day weekend (maybe four days if you’re fortunate enough like we are to have Friday off as well) and celebrating with our yearly traditions. Let’s take a look at some of the common associations with this summer holiday.


It is almost impossible to think of any Fourth of July celebration that does not end with fireworks. According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, consumers spent $885 million on fireworks in 2017. Remember to practice safety when enjoying fireworks, each year more than 800 people go to the emergency room as a result of firework- related injuries.

Family & Friends

No Fourth of July celebration is complete without family and friends. The day includes taking time off from your daily schedule to enjoy this summer holiday with your loved ones. For many this may include travel, a BBQ, soaking up the sun by the pool, boating (my personal favorite growing up!) and ending it all with a firework display. No matter what way you decide to celebrate, it is always a day well spent with family and friends.


Every successful party I have ever been to involved good food and drinks. There is nothing like a hot dog or burger fresh off the grill on a scorching summer day. Americans consume 150 million hot dogs on Independence Day alone. That is enough hot dogs to travel from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. five times! Additionally, over $1 billion is spent on beer to wash down all those hot dogs.


Lastly, remember to take a little time to reflect on the historical meaning of this day.  On this day, 243 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was signed officially establishing the original 13 colonies as free independent states. While we all have our own traditions to celebrate this day, we can’t forget the history that made it all possible.
