Amy Dimond, senior director of marketing for the Arizona Coyotes Hockey Club, spoke at a recent PRSA luncheon.

As someone who took his kids to the Coyotes’ first White-Out hockey game in Arizona back in 1997, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested as both a sports fan and a communications professional.

She offered a behind-the-curtains look into the challenges she and her team face in promoting a professional sports team that has faced a lot of uncertainty over the last few years, in addition to heightened competition from both within and outside the geographic market.   They have come up with a lot of creative initiatives to keep their fans engaged.  In doing so, the Coyotes have embraced the communication platforms that their young fans are adopting – and it’s a digital world.

Pulling from a number of resources, including Forbes, Marketing Insider Group, Conversion Advantage, News Media Digital and her own insight, Dimond shared her Top Digital Media Trends for 2016:

  1. Visual content will continue to dominate.
  2. App indexing will lead to an explosion of apps.
  3. The time for social conversion is now.
  4. Mobile will completely dominate desktop.
  5. Live stream will overtake video for extremely engaged audiences.
  6. Snapchat will become the medium for advertising with an expiration date.
  7. Smart marketers will leverage the virtues of content marketing.
  8. Omnichannel marketing will evolve to a truly seemless customer experience.
