Diversity in Facebook’s Accelerator Program

Facebook has been under scrutiny recently for its mishandling of misinformation. Most social platforms have had an issue with the spread false information, which is hard to navigate with billions of posts to filter. To improve its credibility and instead focus on sharing credible new sources, Facebook has created the Accelerator Program.

Twenty newsrooms from the U.S. have been selected to participate in the program to facilitate collaboration between other like-minded news organizations. Minority-owned and published newspapers will share their best practices for digital communications and storytelling to create more diverse content to be shared on Facebook.

The 6-month program will allow these newsrooms to work together with Facebook to improve their business models while sharing their best practices on reporting. One main goal of the program is to encourage Facebook users to support high-quality journalism by subscribing to their local newspapers.

This is a step in the right direction for Facebook to control the misinformation that has been spreading on the platform and encourages users to learn media literacy.
