In a surprising move, Courtney Cox-led ABC comedy Cougar Town is changing its name!

Has that ever happened? Successfully?

Last year, long-time juggernaut Law & Order: SVU lost a ton of viewers by simply being switched to a different night and time and communicating the change effectively. One would think changing the name – hence the entire marketing campaign – would hurt a show similarly?

My thought – love the idea! While I initially turned on the show to see Courtney Cox embarrass herself as a stereotypical cougar, I kept watching it because the show was really an ensemble comedy in sunny Florida with men and women of a certain age – and several ages in between. I think the move – if communicated effectively – can give the show a major jump in the ratings. Especially if they utilize social media to hear from viewers on what they want.

What do you think? What should the new name be? And how should ABC handle the makeover from a marketing perspective?
