Yesterday, I sat in on another fantastic PRSA Phoenix Media Breakfast focusing on the food and beverage industry. #Yum

The panel discussion featured:

The thing I love most about attending a media-led discussion is learning their perspective on how to best pitch. While these media members all cover food-related topics, their focus and approach to storytelling is vastly different. This means your pitch should be different as well.

For example, Barrueta likes to focus on unique and historical aspects to the food and beverage industry. She is partial to focusing on local, high-quality products.  One of Jacoby’s points of focus is to look at national trends and see if anyone in the Valley is doing it. However, Simon does not necessarily always focus on the trends as she likes to talk about the people behind the kitchen doors and tell their story.

There is one universal thing you can do when pitching, which is you must begin with research.  Find out what they have covered in the past. It does not hurt to ask what their current projects are or what they would like to write about in the future.

I encourage anyone who works with the media to attend these types of events. The knowledge acquired is not something you will grasp from sitting at your desk. So, get out there and network!
