I’m a big fan of Randy Hall of 4th Gear Consulting. He keynoted a session at Counselors Academy in 2010 and my sister and I had the chance to meet up with him in Charlotte during our summer vacation in North Carolina this past July. Our friendship has developed thanks in large part to social networking and the occasional opportunity to see each other in person.

He’s a pretty smart guy when it comes to leadership development so I’ve been subscribing to his blog for a while now.  This blog post in particular caught my attention; Scott and I often talk about where we want the business to be in one year, five years, when he retires, when I retire.  We’ve got ideas, goals, expectations, etc. but there are certainly days when we wonder if we’ll get there.

So his question about living the business or leading the business is an interesting one.  For many small business owners, it is likely a fine line between the two.  You are committed to the success of your company and the success is interconnected with everything you do, personally or professionally.  It is a difficult to make the distinction – how do you make that happen?

  1. Always a tough call, especially for the small business owner. Work in your business or on your business. For most of us, it is probably the same.
