<a href="https://hmapr.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/pen-write1.jpg" target="_blank">The question has been asked a lot lately…what does it take to be a good public relations practitioner.  I believe, and so do most of my colleagues, that it all starts with being a good writer.  There will always be different channels to communicate our messages, but content is so important.  It’s all about the writing.

David French, of RLF Communications in Greensboro wrote this post about being a good writer.

Yes, there are lots of other things you need to know to be good at this job – what makes a good story, AP style, who’s who in the media, how to use social media to advance conversations.  But when it gets right down to it, if you can’t put your thoughts in writing and have it make sense and move the reader to action, well, then…..

  1. Speaking of AP Style, the NAU PRSSA Chapter recently gave me a nice thank-you gift: a 2011 AP Stylebook: http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=10150483434782640&set=a.133997017639.128808.45021392639&type=1&theater
    It replaced the one I had been using since I was in college — before fax machines and lap tops.

    I enjoyed reading Mr. French’s post. While learning a Romance language is probably more practical, I recommend studying Latin to deepen your understanding of English vocabulary. And about once every five years you’ll have the chance to wow your friends when you say, “Actually that’s a derivative of the Latin verb…”
