Glee – and Broadway – fans are up in arms this week after Newsweek ran an article arguing that openly gay actors like Sean Hayes and Glee‘s own Jonathan Groff can’t successfully portray heterosexual characters.

Hollywood has responded – with a call for a boycott.

To me, it isn’t so much about the response from Hollywood as the article in the first place – and the very opinionated nature of it. While editorial comments are nothing new, with the supersonic rise in social media, it seems many news outlets are hurrying to catch up, perhaps in this case at the risk of allowing journalistic to write articles focused less on AP Style and more on US Weekly style?

So, what do you think? Is the article itself nothing special? Or just one of many examples of the national news media getting in PR trouble for trying to get content and controversy up on the web?

Could it be that Jonathan Groff is just not a good actor? I don’t care for him on Glee.
