Celebrating Abbie!
July 2, 2013

On July 1, 1993, the one-and-only Abbie S. Fink walked into HMA Public Relations (then Hanson, Moser and Associates and located down the street from our current Arcadia world headquarters) for her first day on the job.

In honor of her 20th anniversary, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at what else was happening in the world on that day – or close to it.

Ummm…wow!

So, as Abbie was putting in her first grueling day all those years ago (and every day since) for HMA – where were you, and what were you up to?

Comment below.

As noted, I was 12 years old and mourning the Suns’ loss to the Bulls in full force. However, at that exact time, I was most likely donning my sweet tie-tyed, special edition Suns shirt and meeting up with my family to go to the big post-season Suns welcome home celebration at the airport. Either that, or I was in line to see Jurassic Park for the 10th time, just thrilled that Jeff Goldblum had another movie gig (prior – I had only seen him in Earth Girls are Easy, but adored him in it! PS – Google that movie if you want to laugh at him, Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey as aliens living with Geena Davis.)

  2. Kelly Potts says:

I was, as noted, two. So, I think its pretty safe to say that 20 years ago I was watching Beauty and the Beast, still the best Disney movie (on VHS- that was later hidden from me because my mom was tired of watching it), or I was tormenting my older brother – as any good sister would do!

    Happy HMA anniversary Abbie!

Frmo Charlotte Shaf: Look at you, Abbie! Congrats on 20 years. I think I was bartending at The Brass Saloon in Mt Pleasant, MI and taking a summer Broadcast Law class (for the 2nd time) at Central Michigan University in July 1993.

  4. Alison Bailin says:

From Deb Caron: Oh, and I was probably on the beach celebrating having just completed my senior of high school… which makes me feel a little old.

  5. Katie says:

Considering I was only three at the time my best guess is that I was probably running around playing dress up in mommy’s clothes, beginning my obsession with Barbie and watching a lot of Sesame Street and Barney and Friends.

    That was the life.

  6. Peter Faur says:

Abbie, let’s just say I was younger, working at FleishmanHillard in St. Louis (it was hyphenated back then, but I’m honoring their desire to be hyphenless now) and cheering on our kids at baseball and softball games. I know we went to Disney World that year. It was a calm year, as I recall.

  7. Alison Bailin says:

From Veronica Graves: We moved a lot when I was little though, so my childhood between 0 and 7 are a blur! It was six – I know that much!

  8. Ken Reinstein says:

I was working for Samaritan Health (Banner) and just shy of two years married to my wife Sara. I also was training for or had recently done the MS 150 Best Dam Bike Ride.

  9. Scott Hanson says:

I was working with clients in retail, tribal affairs and transportation. Talk about ground hog years!!!!

  10. I remember coming into work thinking this was going to be a cool place — July 1 was a Monday that year, too. So we worked three days and then had the long holiday weekend.

I was absolutely right — this is a cool place to work. We have awesome clients, a great team throughout the years, and I’m thrilled with all we’ve been able to accomplish.

Here’s to another 20 years of success!

  11. Marina says:

    Congratulations, Abbie!

I graduated from high school that year and was probably studying to take my driving test. I didn’t turn 16 until a week or so before graduation, and was too busy studying for finals so decided to wait until afterwards to get my driver’s license. You’ll be happy to know I passed with a high score (I think it was 92 out of 100).

I was 10 and probably planning my 4th of July festivities; cake – check, decorations – check, fireworks – check….once a planner always a planner…
