Last week, a special group of college students visited several sides of the PR world: in-house at Fender; government at the Phoenix Fire Department; and PR firm here at the HMA World Headquarters. Among the students was our very own former intern, Rachel Lilly! We asked her and her colleagues to share with us what they learned that day. Take it away, Rachel!

On November 18th, the Northern Arizona University chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America visited HMA to catch a glimpse into the not-so-average days of a public relations agency.  From the ups and downs of job search to agency inspiration, here is what the students have to say about this influential experience…

"I valued the insight that HMA gave on staying current in the PR industry. With graduation right around the corner, the tips will definitely help me be successful."

-Rachel Rogala

“Shadow day overall was an invaluable experience for me. Not only did I gain insight into obtaining a position after graduation, I also really learned about essential skills that are needed to be successful in the Public Relations industry. I will definitely be very busy this week updating my resume! It was especially helpful to hear from Brittany and Stephanie as they gave helpful hints to landing a job after graduation. With graduation coming up in less than a month for me now I will waste no time in following their suggestions!”

-Emma Bohmke

“Shadow Day at HMA PR was inspirational and encouraging for all of our upcoming graduates who are looking and applying for jobs. I’ve learned that your resume is your first impression to potential employers and it is important to stand out amongst the crowds.  It might be hard at first, but the more time you put into applying, the more you will get out in the end.”

-Hannah Newell

“It was really great to hear about the variety of clients HMA works with on a daily basis.  They all really seem to love their jobs!”

-Sara Martin

“Visiting HMA was so much fun and they offered so many wonderful tips. Brittany and Stephanie provided us with really beneficial advice about resumes and tips about getting internships and jobs. I love the diversity of the HMA clients as well.”

-Alex Harlan

“I really enjoyed HMA.  It was great to see the diversity of the clients they serve.  I also learned some wonderful resume tips and how to be more marketable when applying for jobs.”

-Max Armstrong

“Shadow day at HMA public relations was so fun! I learned a lot about the clients they work with as well as resume tips.  Stephanie and Brittany were so helpful and answered all our questions about applying for jobs after graduation.  Thanks HMA for meeting with the NAU PRSSA chapter.”

-Jennifer Buzzard

“HMA’s shadow day was both entertaining and informational.  Brittany and Stephanie gave us insight on what it is really like in the industry and in the current job market.  Kendra was very informative on jobs in agencies, and how to stand out.  Hearing about HMA’s clients and what they do made me realize how diverse and exciting the agency world is.  Thanks so much for having us!”

-Caitlin Heck

“The energy and creativity at HMA PR is nothing short of informational and inspiring.  I truly appreciate the knowledge that Scott, Kendra, Brittany and Stephanie shared with us this past week during shadow day.  They are always honest and excited about the realities of agency clients, resume enhancement and the facts of PR in general.  Thank you all so much for your encouragement and insight and good luck with the votes, Kendra!!”

-Rachel Lilly
