#Media Monday – Tim Healey

Tim Healey[inlinetweet prefix=”” tweeter=”” suffix=””]With the college #football season ready to open, today’s #MediaMonday should get you in the spirit.[/inlinetweet]

It comes from the longtime voice of Arizona State University athletics, Tim Healey, who was named the 2015 Arizona Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.  He’s getting ready for his 19th season as the radio play-by-play voice for ASU football, men’s basketball and baseball.

Tim, time to share:

As a life-long sports fan, I knew as early as the eighth grade exactly what I wanted to do for a living.  After graduating from Penn State University in 1973, I began my broadcasting career.

I worked at six television stations across the country, including KTVK-TV and KSAZ-TV in Phoenix, before becoming the radio Voice of the Sun Devils in 1998.  Having done television play-by-play for ASU on Channel 3 from 1988-to-98, I’ve actually been broadcasting ASU athletics on TV or radio for 29 years and have been behind the mike for over 1,500 Sun Devil football, basketball and baseball game broadcasts.  I’ve been fortunate to witness some amazing ASU moments:

  • My 200th ASU football radio broadcast, on October 2, 2014, was a 38-34 Sun Devil victory at USC, capped off by the now famous “Jael Mary” touchdown pass from Mike Bercovici to Jaelen Strong on the game’s final play. Coach Todd Graham later presented me with the game ball to commemorate the win and the milestone.
  • My 500th Sun Devil men’s basketball radio broadcast, in November 2015, was a last-second victory over UC Santa Barbara.
  • And this past season, I described the 10th no-hit, no-run game in ASU baseball history, Ryan Hingst’s 5-0 victory over eventual Pac-12 champion Utah on March 25th.

Away from the broadcast booth, I enjoy spending time with my wife of nearly 43 years, Margie, and our family, which includes daughter Katie, son Joe, son-in-law Bryce Gerrich, and our first grandchild, Ella Celeste Gerrich, born in May 2016.   My daughter Katie is the choral director at Tempe McClintock High School.  My son Joe is an ASU graduate (class of ’06) and co-host of his own ASU football-themed podcast “Speak of the Devils.”  Son-in-law Bryce Gerrich serves as my home-game spotter for Sun Devil football broadcasts.  My wife Margie is the school secretary at St. Timothy Catholic School in Mesa.  We’ve been parishoners at St. Timothy since 1984.
