For most, Memorial Day means a long weekend, BBQs and pool parties. While it is an unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day also stands for something much greater – it is a day to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our county and to care for the loved ones they left behind.

This week Phoenix was reminded of the magnitude of this sacrifice. Our city lost two of our finest men: Bradley Harper, a Phoenix firefighter and Officer Daryl Raetz, a member of the Phoenix Police Department and an Iraq War veteran. Both lost their lives in tragic accidents while on duty protecting the public.

A heartwarming example of how servicemen and women go above and beyond the call of service – when Raetz’ young daughter graduated from kindergarten this week, only three days after her father’s untimely death, members of the PPD family came to stand in the fallen officer’s place. Nearly 400 officers came to support the 5-year-old on her big day.

We know there are lots of examples out there like this.  So while you’re relaxing on Monday, take one minute to remember.
