Abbie & Scott - Just Gleeking Out

Ever notice how many successful singers decide to go try acting – and vice versa – with varying levels of success?

While sometimes I love it (Barbara Streisand!), and sometimes I loathe it (LeAnn Rimes, Lindsay Lohan, et al), I actually understand it. After all, can you think of any kids back in high school who were in drama but NOT in choir or chorus as well?

I can’t.

That’s why – even as I secretly wait for a juicy behind-the-scenes scandal to break – I have legitimate happiness for all of the kids on Glee, who just finished up their season and are prepping to go on a singing summer tour. They are literally living the dream so many celebrities have tried to achieve – singing, dancing and acting all at once. In short – they are performers.

And, in my mind, we PR peeps are no different.

In short – we are communicators.

Through public relations as it is today, we report on news, perform creative writing, pitch media, act as spokespeople, plan event, blog, strategize and more – sometimes all in the same day.

  • We aren’t simply writing stories.
  • We aren’t simply pitching our clients or brand.
  • We aren’t simply focusing on event logistics.

Just like the kids on Glee, we get to do it all today.

I think that’s worth a happy dance or song at your desk today.

Anyone care to post theirs? I will if you will!!

  1. Alison Bailin says:

My other thought takes this a bit further – what kind of PR Gleek are you? I worry I am a Rachel too often and perhaps need to be more of a Mr. Shu! How about you?

  2. Stephanie Lough says:

I think I am a Brittany S. Pearce. She says random things that can seem weird, always hilarious yet have some underlining brilliancy all in one. She always has good intentions and is accepting of everyone. Although I’d like to think I’m a bit smarter than her!

Plus, I love to dance, sing to Brittney Spears and still have my old Titan (same mascot as McKinley High!) cheerio uniform in my closet.

Oh – and we are both from Scottsdale!

  3. My friend David Landis tells me I look like one of the Glee characters….. but I can’t remember which one.

  4. Now if I could only sing! Scott — you look like Mr. Shuster – Matthew Morrison.

  5. David Landis says:

Alison – OK, full disclosure here. I am probably the biggest GLEEK (except for our PRGN colleague Anne Buchanan in Philly) around. To whit, I flew down to LA last weekend – why? Specifically, to attend the GLEE concert tour at the Staples Center. A former employee of mine scored box seats and how could I resist?

Second, your parallels between PR and GLEE are phenomenal – brilliant post!

Third, not only does Scott Hanson greatly resemble Matthew Morrison (OK, Scott, I guess you’re not watching!), but our PRGN partner in Boston, Sandy Lish, looks like his ex-wife on the show.

I think Sandy and Scott should do a GLEEK video, don’t you?

    Love this!

    Cheers, David

  6. Sandy Lish says:

I don’t know what to say about David flying to LA for the Glee performance, except…HOW WAS IT???? They are coming to Boston….

Scott, according to David, you and I can stand in for a couple of the actors. Can you sing???

Great post–“doing it all” is why I love PR–

  7. Scott Hanson has just revealed the true depth of his geekness by not knowing that he is destined to play the role of Mr. Shu.

The rest of the cast can be played by the following PRGN members:

Terri (Mr. Shu’s crazy ex-wife): Sandy Lish
    Curt: David Landis
    Sue: Anne Buchanan

Who else wants to get their Gleek on?

  8. Abbie, just sing/talk and dance. It’s much better than going to the effort of finding the right pitch!

  9. OMG – Scott does look just like Mr. Shu!!! Perhaps we can convince him to get a perm and be Mathew Morrison for Halloween? And the rest of team HMA can be the Glee members!! I call Rachel!!
