Balance and the Art of Business Maintenance

I came across a “Personal Appearance” guide for a large national company and thought it was interesting what corporate America will and will not permit in regard to employees – before they even come to work. While it states “current styles and individualism are not discouraged, extremes of any kind should be avoided…” This is just a sampling from the guide

For males,

  • Dress shirts and coordinating ties must be worn in the office.
  • Coats and ties must be worn on all business calls.
  • Hair length should be kept above the collar.
  • Sideburns and mustaches should be neatly trimmed.
  • Long-sleeve dress shirts are recommended.
  • Dress socks must be worn.
  • Dress slacks must be worn.

The following are not permitted:

  • Beards, goatees or eccentric styles of facial hair
  • Earrings
  • Visible body piercings and tattoos

For females,

  • Dresses, skirt and blouse combinations, or suits must be worn.
  • Dress pants should have a crease.
  • Conservative scarves and headbands are permissible.
  • Sleeveless blouses and dresses must be worn with a jacket at all times.
  • Skirts and dresses must be no shorter than two inches above the knee.
  • Fingernails should be a professional color and length.
  • Earrings are limited to two pairs per lower lobe only.

The following are not permitted:

  • Jumpsuits, sundresses, T-shirts, tank tops, halters and midriff tops
  • Backless, sheer or revealing blouses
  • Extremely revealing or tight-fitting clothing
  • Spandex, tights or stirrup pants
  • Low-cut blouses, sweaters or dresses
  • Visible body piercings (except earrings) and tattoos

I prefer a little more flexibility. After all – Friday Shorts Day at HMA is a long-standing tradition!

  1. The main reason I started my own biz!
    Happy Friday, Crazy Legs Hanson!

  2. Whaaa?? You mean I’m NOT allowed to wear my spandex stirrup pants?

I kid, I kid (those are only for the weekends). But seriously, it is nice to be a little flexible, particularly on Fridays. Since 3/4 of the HMAers have tattoos that are visible with flip-flops or cropped pants, I feel like you have to be.

    On Monday, all business.

    Thanks Scott!
