abbieThere is something very energizing about Counselors Academy. Very smart public relations owners and managers willing to share just about anything and everything about their business with their fellow practitioners. This year’s theme focused on profits, people and potential – we’ve discussed ways to improve cash flow, how to turn professional development into new business development; what the global economy means to agencies and how to manage the three generations that are now working in the firm.

We heard from Robert Stephens, founder of the Geek Squad, on how to create buzz around your business. A big proponent of public relations and brand management, he lives and breathes his commitment to the Geek Squad, including wearing the official Geek Squad uniform – white short-sleeved shirt, tie and dark slacks – during his presentation.

Just a few of his thoughts:

  • Approach to creating business as "World I want to live in... world of Oompa Loompas." Great approach to life.
  • Three things Geek Squad looks for when hiring: curiosity, ethics, drive.
  • Customer service satisfaction is higher when companies make a mistake and FIX IT than when companies don't make mistakes at all.
  • It's easier to stand out and be creative in unglamorous businesses like tech support. But we can all stand out in our business.
  • All business needs competition to stay fresh.
  • Stay consistent with your brand; create your own language.

The final day of the conference holds more of the same – a few more breakout sessions and a final presentation from Suzanne Bates, president/CEO of Bates Communications on successful leadership.

    Abbie,
    I am enjoying your updates from the conference.

    I just came from one, too – the PR Boutiques International meeting in LA. I found out how important it is to be in a room with other firm owners who are facing the same challenges as you are. I loved hearing others’ approaches to solving these same problems in their other markets.

    Hopefully, I’ll be able to share some of my takeaways soon on our blog.
