#MediaMonday – Colton Krolak

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Colton Krolak, a reporter for KTAR FM.

How did you get your start in the media? What is your story?

Both of my parents were Valley journalists, so I grew up around news and have always had a tremendous amount of respect for those in the industry. I graduated with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from ASU, but after college, I pursued other interests. Seven years after graduation I was looking to get into the “family” business, and I was planning on going back to school for Sports Journalism. After asking one of my former professors for a letter of recommendation, she recommended me for a job at KTAR News, where I have now worked for a little more than a year.

Tell us about your outlet and types of story pitches you want?

KTAR News just celebrated its 100-year anniversary of bringing news to the Valley, and I am honored to work with and learn from such amazing professionals. I am a general assignment reporter, and therefore I am interested in a wide variety of topics! The stories I am passionate about; however, are topics involving sports, health and wellness, public safety, or technology.

Where did you grow up?

I am a Valley native and am proud of it! I grew up in North Central Phoenix and recently moved to the East Valley, and I can’t imagine living in any other state.

Favorite color?

Green

Favorite TV shows or movies?

South Park, Rick and Morty, Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad. I think I’ve seen them each 10 times and never get bored of any of them.

Favorite local restaurants or other haunts?

Hopdoddy Burger Bar. There’s one in Scottsdale and Central Phoenix. Their truffle fries are a must. Also,

Joyride Taco House.

Three things readers would be surprised to know about you?

  • I am currently training for a physique competition (it’s a subsection of bodybuilding), and I will be competing in May.
  • I am a former competitive rifle and shotgun shooter and was a member of ASU’s shotgun team.
  • I play the drums.
