March Madness is in full swing – and without even being close to making it into the NCAA basketball tournament, Grand Canyon University has, for now, stolen the college hoops limelight – at least in Arizona.
The ‘Lopes, who will begin play at the Division I level next season, college basketball’s highest level, named Valley basketball legend Dan Majerle as their new head coach earlier this week.
Majerle, whose playing career with the Phoenix Suns earned him induction into the team’s Ring of Honor, appeared to be in-line to become the Suns’ head coach. That all changed a few months ago when “Thunder Dan” and another Suns’ assistant coach were passed over for the head coaching job.
Majerle’s credentials appeared to make him qualified to become a head coach in the NBA – especially here where his gritty play and years as an assistant coach made him a fan-favorite. But for whatever reason, it did not happen.
Now, Majerle will be responsible for recruiting top talent to Arizona by way of the new basketball arena at Grand Canyon University – sort of a de facto tourism/economic development director. Or simply – the new face of Grand Canyon University.
