Applying for jobs can be tough, especially for a new graduate, and thanks to last night’s PRSA Phoenix New Pros event, the process just got a little bit easier!
The event, “Interviews, resumes, and portfolios, oh my!” featured PR pros Page Englert, Jeff Pizzino, Aly Saxe and Jane Poston.
Each panelist gave some great advice on applying for the perfect job. Some of the highlights:
- Page: Dress for the job you want and it is way better to be overdressed than under-dressed for your interview. This is your first impression with the company, so make it a good one!
- Aly: Make your cover letter like a pitch. Show me you can pitch yourself, and I will get an idea of how you will pitch in the job. For your resumes, customize it for the job. Put your most relevant (even if it’s not the most current) experience at the top. Always have a portfolio, whether it is an online one or hard copy, it is important to show off your work and show us what you can do based off of projects you worked on for clients at current or past jobs.
- Jeff: I believe a cover letter and elevator pitch are still extremely important to use when applying for jobs. I got two of my jobs based on my cover letter alone! Customize both to show how you will fit with the company, and what you can bring to the company. Show them how you will serve and what needs you can fulfill within the company.
- Jane: Research the job and company before you apply and interview! The more you know about the company, the better you will look in your interview. I love it when an applicant says to me “I loved the XYZ campaign that you ran. I really thought that was unique to our city.” We will be so impressed you recognized that. Before your interview, think of a few typical interview questions and have your answers prepared.
This was a great new pros event for students, recent graduates and new pros alike.
