Recently, I got to experience first-hand a day (well, morning anyway) in the life of a public relations professional. It was Free Breakfast Day for Jamba Juice (one of our clients) and the event was being held from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
I got my first call from a media person at about 4:30 a.m., telling me the station would have to cancel its live interview because there was breaking news. I went back to sleep for a little while and headed out at 6 a.m. to one of the Jamba locations. On my way, I called the second station that was scheduled to come out to the event, only to find out they too would have to cancel. However, they said that they would talk about Jamba Juice on-air if I could get some smoothies to them in downtown Phoenix.
My expert downtown navigational skills (note the sarcasm) got me there a few minutes too late for the smoothies to go on the air for that segment. Nevertheless, the station made several mentions of Free Breakfast Day throughout the morning broadcast while everyone enjoyed the new breakfast items being promoted. Better still was the fact that I got to personally deliver smoothies to on-air radio talent at a handful of stations. So despite the unfortunate beginning to the morning, we found success in other opportunities, which was pretty cool.
