Where would we be if we didn’t have mentors?  I’ve had the benefit of some really great mentors throughout my career, I hope I’ve returned the favor when I’ve agreed to serve in that role for others.

But what does it take to build a successful mentor relationship?  Do these relationships have sustainability?  Do they need to?

These and other questions will be discussed during 2013’s first #HAPPO chat on Monday, February 18 at 8 p.m. CT.  Monday may be a holiday for some of you (it is for us here at HMA), but these conversations are definitely worth checking out.  Just follow the #HAPPO hashtag (I use tweetchat for these types of conversations) and Help a PR Pro Out.

And to prep for it, share with me what you think makes a good mentor/mentee relationship.  Any advice for someone seeking a mentor?

  1. Scott Hanson says:

Both the mentor and the mentee should have flexibility to meet the other’s scheduling constraints or needs. And, maybe one common interest, whether it is the theater, sports, excersie or something that provides even the slightest connection.

I hope to be part of the chat Monday but in case I can’t, and to get people started, members of PRSA can get a mentor through the College of Fellows. For those not aware, the College is comprised of senior professionals who have had a significant impact on the profession. Once honored, most continue to give back through the mentoring program. When you sign up to get a mentor, the online form has questions that get to the cruz of why you want a mentor and helps to make the best match.
