The Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) Executive Director, Sherri Collins, has been selected by Deaf Women United (DWU) to be spotlighted during Deaf Women History Month for her significant contributions to the betterment of deaf women.

DWU is committed to continuing a community of support of deaf women from all lifestyles. DWU provides leadership to and empowers Deaf women all over the country by the creation of a support system that will enhance their lives.

As ACDHH’s executive director, Collins advocates, strengthens and implements state policies affecting deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and their relationship to the public, industry, healthcare and educational opportunities. She has held the position of executive director since May 1998

Collins is also the chair of Phoenix College, Interpreter Preparation Program Advisory board; board member and past president of the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind; council member of the Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council; and is a certified Raw Vegan Chief. She is a partner in Raw Dazzle, a raw foods interest group and leads cooking classes for deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

Appleby is a resident of Avondale.

Established in 1977 to improve the quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing residents,   ACDHH serves as a statewide information referral center for issues related to people with hearing loss and aspires to be a national leader in communication access, support services and community empowerment throughout the state. The purpose of the organization, and its commissioners, is to ensure, in partnership with the public and private sector, accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing to improve their quality of life.
