Beth 2008“A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Awesome, awesome…like totally!”

They weren’t the most poetic words, but they acted as a strange call to action for Elizabeth (Beth) Wilkinson. A cheerleader since her Pop Warner days, she was now the co-captain of the varsity squad at Clairemont High School in San Diego. She had performed this cheer all too many times throughout her four years at the school, and it had now been reduced to a joke on the squad – a group of sarcastic, witty and athletic girls who challenged the stereotype.

Coupled with her experience as the senior class publicity officer of Clairemont’s Associated Student Body and a mishap in AP Biology that led her to switch into the journalism class (don’t ask), the cheer caused an idea to form in Beth’s head. She realized that she liked turning something bad (Clairemont’s football team) into something good (a fun weekend activity), and that she liked to use her creativity to get people excited about upcoming events. An overachiever, Beth’s grades earned her a scholarship to Arizona State University, where she was interested in applying for the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She had never been to Arizona and she knew no one attending the university, but those were minor details.

At ASU, Beth chose public relations as her concentration and, after a nine-month study abroad program in Spain, Spanish as her minor. She was involved with the school radio station’s news program and was a member of the Barrett Honors College, where she wrote her thesis about the marketing strategies of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury – much more interesting than anything she could have learned in AP Bio. She graduated magna cum laude from the Cronkite School with the particular specialty of cheering loudly…from the stands of Sun Devil Stadium.

Now at HMA Public Relations, Beth is proud to be an account coordinator. Her life experiences have led her to a place where she can funnel her creativity, world view and overachiever-ness into new ideas for clients. They may not necessarily be conventional but, she hopes, they will be awesome. Like totally.
