The Associated Press recently announced guidelines regarding reporters’ use of social media sites and posting of personal opinions.
Although they are encouraging their staffers to maintain Facebook, Twitter and other social sites, the new guidelines offer very specific rules about reposting updates without proper attribution. In other words, be careful not to simply repost so that the content is not seen as an endorsement from the AP.
The guidelines further point to privacy issues, engagement with “newsmakers” and how to appropriately utilize the social sites to seek out sources and share stories.
I would expect we’ll see guidelines similar to this popping up at other traditional news outlets as well.
