This week’s tip is thanks to Ragan, who did a great blog offering 10 tips to excelling at PR.

With end-of-year reviews – both those from our bosses and our own internal check-ups – I (Alison, that is) thought this was an especially helpful and had a few additional tips:

  1. Become a Mentor – chances are you will learn something new too.
  2. Calm Down – we PR types tend to be a little type A. Sometimes our own over-eagerness is our worst enemy
  3. Do Someone Else’s Job One in a While – If you’re a senior exec, take some time to update a media list once in a while; if you are the president of the company, come to a client meeting; if you are an intern, ask about pitching a story. It helps to understand where you are, where your team is, and what has changed over time. Look forward, but also always look back

Any other tips? Comment below!

  1. 4. Get involved – Join groups, volunteer, attend events, network. You will build your contacts and stay current on what is happening in your area, making you a real asset to your agency.

  2. 1. Know what’s happening around you — both locally, nationally and internationally.
    2. Continue professional development – you can always learn something new.
    3. And I echo Patricia’s comment about volunteering – it is a great way to keep your skills fresh and interact with others with a common passion.
