I will never forget my one-year review at HMA Public Relations, where Abbie talked to me about my love for all things “micro.”

And it wasn’t a compliment.

To this day, I love “thinking small” and getting down and dirty with PR tactics.

Sure, I can develop a big-picture PR plan with the best of ‘em. Heck, I’ve even won awards for it. I CAN think big – but love thinking small. And I think it has made all the difference in my career as well as so many long-term relationships with clients, vendors and the media.

You know who also advises to think small from time to time – Dale Carnegie!

In Carnegie’s most recent book, How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age, his team discusses the importance of thinking small from time to time. I wanted to share two tips from the book that resonated with me in a major way:

  • Yes, there is a big picture, but what little things are we doing each day to help paint it?
  • What small moments are impacting the big picture – how we can make more small moments to increase the impact?

Have you thought small today? Would love your thoughts on how thinking small can effect big changes.

  1. I would put proofreading in the “small” category, but it’s vitally important to us in our industry. Maybe it’s “attention to detail,” that I’m trying to get at.
